Mobile Device Security

Mobile devices such as Laptop, Smartphone, tablet, or any other smart device are susceptible to more risks than personal computers due to their mobile nature. Losing a mobile device means more than just temporarily losing the ability to communicate. It also means losing confidential & critical data. Therefore take precautions with mobile devices when shopping, banking, or sharing personal information online and to always ensure physical security of your device.

  • Do not leave your devices unattended in public or easily accessible areas.
  • Install security patches as soon as possible to prevent attackers from being able to take advantage of known problems or vulnerabilities.
  • Encrypt the files of mobile devices  to ensure that unauthorized/malicious people can't view data even if they can physically access it.
  • Avoid connecting your devices to any computer or charging station that you do not control.
  • Only install applications from legitimate sources.
  • Public wireless networks and hotspots are not secure which means someone could potentially see what you are doing while you are connected. You should NEVER log into key accounts or do any online shopping, banking etc, while using such networks.
  • Only use sites that begin with “https://” when online shopping or banking.
  • Using your mobile network connection is generally more secure than using a public wireless network.
  • Secure your mobile device before you sell it by following below procedure:
    • Backup all your data
    • Log out of services like email and social media, then clear the data from these apps if you can
    • Remember to remove the SIM card and any external storage such as a microSD card
    • Perform a factory reset before selling your mobile device
    • Keep the serial number of device for your records
